Floss, Brush, Mouthwash: What's the Right Order?
Flossing, brushing, and mouthwash: They all play a big role in oral health care, but remembering the right order can be confusing. Here, we explain how expert-backed recommendations make it easy.

Protecting your teeth and gums also supports overall wellness, so it's important to use every tool possible to maintain good oral health. At Whole Body Dental, we're here to help you do that through personalized holistic dentistry in Bellevue, Washington.

Our experienced team often hears from patients who find following the oral hygiene sequence confusing. Today's blog makes it easier by explaining what the experts say about the order to brush, floss, and use mouthwash.

What does the ADA say?

The American Dental Association (ADA) notes that the order of oral hygiene steps can depend on personal preference and product ingredients. For example, their recommendations on flossing and brushing order are simple: It doesn't really matter which you choose as long as you floss thoroughly between every tooth.

For mouthwash, the ADA recommends following the manufacturer's guidelines. Many mouthwashes don't specify order use, so it's entirely up to your personal preferences.

However, some types of toothpaste may contain ingredients that could interact with certain mouthwash ingredients, like fluoride ions, to neutralize the effectiveness of the mouthwash.

In those situations, the manufacturer may recommend steps to avoid this, like brushing first but rinsing with water before using the mouthwash.

The best order for your routine

Although you can choose the order of flossing, brushing, and using mouthwash based on your preferences, many of our patients find this order effective.

Floss first

Flossing can access and eliminate stray food particles and plaque buildup between teeth.

This may allow you to clean more thoroughly between your teeth with your toothbrush, reaching the crevices that might otherwise be missed.

Brush second

Brushing removes plaque (sticky bacteria buildup) from the surface of your teeth and gums. This helps prevent tartar from forming.

We recommend fluoride toothpaste, which strengthens your tooth enamel. Follow the 2x2 rule: Two minutes, two times daily (morning and night.)

Rinse last

Mouthwash helps wash away lingering debris and provides an extra layer of protection against bacteria and plaque while refreshing your breath.

However, if your mouthwash contains alcohol, be mindful of excessive use, as itcan dry out your mouth. An alcohol-free option with antibacterial ingredients can help maintain moisture while killing bacteria.
