Dental Implants Q & A
A dental implant is a post, usually made of titanium or zirconium that is placed into your gum where there is a missing tooth. Dr.Ghorbani prefers zirconium implants and has been using them since they first became available in the United States.
After the implant is placed and fuses with the surrounding bone and tissue, a custom abutment is placed to connect the artificial tooth(crown) to the implant to restore the tooth function.
The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for a dental implant is to have a consultation with Dr. Ghorbani (formerly ‘Mashoof’). After a thorough exam, he can discuss which treatment option is best for you. You might be a good candidate for dental implants if you:
- Have a missing tooth or teeth
- Are experiencing dental problems due to a missing tooth
- Don’t want dentures
- Have good oral health
The initial visit would include the extraction (if a tooth is not already missing), the bone grafting is done to make sure you have sufficient bone structure for the implant placement. The second visit would be six months out, where the site has healed and the bone structure has formed. The CT Scan would be taken to make sure the bone structure is sufficient before placing the implant. The third appointment would be a couple months out, where an impression would be taken to allow the placement of the abutment and the crown.
The implant is strong enough to allow the artificial tooth to function just like the rest of your teeth. If you have more than one missing tooth, you may need more than one implant. Dental implants fix cosmetic issues and prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting into the space of a missing tooth. They can also prevent bone loss in your jaw.
With the right dental implant, you can return to a more natural pattern of eating and speaking, and your jaw and face will look more balanced. Since implants aren’t noticeable, you can also feel confident in your new smile.
